This is a Super 8 video I made for our Christmas song. The song is off a free download album called A Very Little Christmas, which comprises Auckland bands performing new Christmas songs recorded entirely by Little Monster Studios. It’s really quite swell and you might like to download it if you want something seasonal, yet less maddening than carols to listen to this holidays. It also features Artisan Guns, Tono and The Finance Company, Great North, Timothy Blackman and a bunch of other bands I enjoy. Here is the link: http://www.littlemonsterstudio.co.nz/avlc.html
The location is actually Little Monster Dave’s house, and major thanks for him letting us film there and Phoebe for letting Josie walk her and Jane for letting us film her hands briefly. Dave Parker is one of the best humans I know. This is my first time using Super 8 and it was fun - although I wish I had shot more than one roll (hence the million repeated shots). Hoping to make more videos in the near future, and hoping to edit them on something other than Windows Movie Maker, although I can’t deny the ‘heart’ transition has its charms.
This year has been terrible and I can’t wait for it to end, Merry Christmas to you all.

- Gene Simmons from Kiss is the bad guy
- It’s directed by the guy who wrote Jurassic Park
- The robots look like mechano

Kimbra - Cameo Lover
I know Kimbra used to play this lite + funky pop back when she started out, like on that Jason Mraz-y Simply On My Lips. But that always surprised me, at the same time I remember meeting her and she had great taste - she just weirdly happened to enjoy Blood Brothers, This Night Creeps… and making pop music that reflected none of that.
But it sounds like her music is catching up. Settle Down was pretty good, and this is even better. Someone sent Cameo Lover to me the other week and I’ve been obsessed with it since. Genius. Has some traits of 60s girl group pop but it still comes across as futuristic. Check out the vocal going to another level at 2.20’, girl’s got so much chops. On this basis, can’t wait to hear her record Vows.

R-A-P-T-O-R
A few years ago I watched this really incredible movie called Raptor. It was this post-Jurassic Park, straight to video clunker. But also one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen.
The plot concerns a small town plagued by mysterious animal attacks. At one point there’s this couple hooking up in a ute, and just as the girl gets her top off, this raptor, which honestly, looks like a sock puppet, pops its head up in the window with this demented grin and dismembers them.
Some plucky cop does some digging. And it turns out, there was recently a dinosaur cloning project in the area. The head scientist, whose name is (seriously) “Mr Hyde”, has gone rogue since the government cut his funding.
Then there’s just heaps of terrible SFX and a hilarious showdown between a T-Rex and this plucky cop manning a construction digger. So great.
