This is a Super 8 video I made for our Christmas song. The song is off a free download album called A Very Little Christmas, which comprises Auckland bands performing new Christmas songs recorded entirely by Little Monster Studios. It’s really quite swell and you might like to download it if you want something seasonal, yet less maddening than carols to listen to this holidays. It also features Artisan Guns, Tono and The Finance Company, Great North, Timothy Blackman and a bunch of other bands I enjoy. Here is the link: http://www.littlemonsterstudio.co.nz/avlc.html

The location is actually Little Monster Dave’s house, and major thanks for him letting us film there and Phoebe for letting Josie walk her and Jane for letting us film her hands briefly. Dave Parker is one of the best humans I know. This is my first time using Super 8 and it was fun - although I wish I had shot more than one roll (hence the million repeated shots). Hoping to make more videos in the near future, and hoping to edit them on something other than Windows Movie Maker, although I can’t deny the ‘heart’ transition has its charms.

This year has been terrible and I can’t wait for it to end, Merry Christmas to you all.

Though I guess no-one ever really stays dead in comics, aside from Gwen Stacy et al. A while ago, Captain America died and got replaced by his believed to be dead sidekick. Which was really awesome because while he was K.I.A he’d become a brainwashed cybernetic assasin for the SOVIETS and had been killing people throughout the Cold War (via cryogenic breaks in between drinks). The only way to redeem himself was to become Captain America. THEN it turns out the original Captain America wasn’t actually dead and he came back and let new Captain America carry on. Then new Captain America supposedly died again. Now old Captain America is back. I kinda hate it, because the original Captain America is boring the same way Superman is boring/he’s too perfect. Except for that one time his shield said a rude word.

I don’t listen to much hardcore anymore, if you can even still call this that, but Fucked Up are an immensely rewarding band. If you’re up for the challenge (to those who would normally shy away from heavier listening) they’re an inspiring listen and their guitars rule.

Musical wizard and all around good guy Jonathan from Artisan Guns has been keeping an awesome blog called The Chalk Archives. He’s been taking a 1/4 inch reel to reel tape recorder to shows and documenting songs, and then writing some thoughtful words and recollections on the night and related topics. He’s got a slew of recordings he’s yet to post, so sounds like there’ll be regular updates from now. Check it out for special moments compressed by tape.

I know Kimbra used to play this lite + funky pop back when she started out, like on that Jason Mraz-y Simply On My Lips. But that always surprised me, at the same time I remember meeting her and she had great taste - she just weirdly happened to enjoy Blood Brothers, This Night Creeps… and making pop music that reflected none of that.

But it sounds like her music is catching up. Settle Down was pretty good, and this is even better. Someone sent Cameo Lover to me the other week and I’ve been obsessed with it since. Genius. Has some traits of 60s girl group pop but it still comes across as futuristic. Check out the vocal going to another level at 2.20’, girl’s got so much chops. On this basis, can’t wait to hear her record Vows.

This is Manu Ginobili. He is a bat killer from Argentina. This hand eye coordination has enabled him to win an NBA championship, Euroleague championship and olympic gold.

In tangential information, he is also A STATISTICAL FREAK. There’s this quote about defending Manu from The No-Stats All Star, a piece about Shane Battier, an innocuous small forward then playing for the Houston Rockets, who just happens to be a defensive scientist and help his team win even when 80% of us think he sucks.

People often say that Kobe Bryant has no weaknesses to his game, but that’s not really true. Before the game, Battier was given his special package of information. “He’s the only player we give it to,” Morey says. “We can give him this fire hose of data and let him sift. Most players are like golfers. You don’t want them swinging while they’re thinking.” The data essentially broke down the floor into many discrete zones and calculated the odds of Bryant making shots from different places on the court, under different degrees of defensive pressure, in different relationships to other players — how well he scored off screens, off pick-and-rolls, off catch-and-shoots and so on. Battier learns a lot from studying the data on the superstars he is usually assigned to guard. For instance, the numbers show him that Allen Iverson is one of the most efficient scorers in the N.B.A. when he goes to his right; when he goes to his left he kills his team. The Golden State Warriors forward Stephen Jackson is an even stranger case. “Steve Jackson,” Battier says, “is statistically better going to his right, but he loves to go to his left — and goes to his left almost twice as often.” The San Antonio Spurs’ Manu Ginóbili is a statistical freak: he has no imbalance whatsoever in his game — there is no one way to play him that is better than another. He is equally efficient both off the dribble and off the pass, going left and right and from any spot on the floor.
